Your bathroom tapware may be a small part of your overall bathroom design, but it still plays an important part.
Tapware can be both functional and decorative, so why not get the best of both worlds and choose something that will last the test of time and look great too?
If you’re renovating a bathroom or designing one from scratch, you’ll probably need to consider tapware for your basin, shower plus the bath (if your bathroom includes a tub).
Tapware comes in two main styles – three-piece sets and mixers. Mixers have a single mixing lever that can be curved or angular. Generally, a three-piece tapware set provides a traditional look whereas a mixer provides a more contemporary look. More recently available are mixer tapware options designed to suit Hamptons style, federation and classic style homes.
You also have the option of hob-mounted (meaning the tapware is mounted on a horizontal surface or directly onto a basin) or wall-mounted tapware. Hob-mounted tapware sets are seamless and visually appealing. Wall-mounted sets can be a great way to keep your vanity bench top clear and allow space for other items.
Here’s a few additional things to keep in mind so you can confidently choose the perfect tapware for your bathroom.
Consider your existing plumbing
If you’re replacing old tapware with new tapware that is not like for like, it always pays to check with a bathroom product expert or a plumber so you know what options are open to you.
Pairing your tapware with your chosen basin
The most important aspect of choosing tapware for your basin is getting the size and type right.
Be sure to think about the size of your basin in relation to the tapware you’re considering. Or better yet, select everything together so that they can be proportionately sized to match each other.
If you choose a spout for your basin which is too long or too short, it can result in water splashing out all over the place. Ideally, water should stream directly over the drain.
There’s definitely a few rules of thumb to keep in mind. For example, not all basins come standard with tapholes, such as vessel basins, which will require either a wall-mounted tapware set or an extra tall or vessel mixer. Whereas if you have a deep inset basin, you’ll need tapware with a long spout.
Pairing your tapware with your shower or bathtub
Some modern bathtubs come with an integrated bath filler. The water emerges from a hole on the underside of a circular (or sometimes square) overflow. These integrated overflows are operated by either a standard wall mixer or diverter mixer.
If you have a freestanding bath, you’ve also got the option of going with a floor mounted bath filler. They bring an extra touch of sophistication to your bathroom with a defined profile and classic look. Many models also come with a showering handpiece for added convenience and ease of use.
Shower-over-bath combos need a special type of tapware called a diverter which are available in a range of styles and colours.
Choosing tapware that complements your bathroom
Usually by the time you’ve gotten around to choosing tapware, you’ve made a decision leaning towards a round or square design for your bathroom. Your tapware should complement that overall design.
Gather options together, take your time and do your research. Create a mood board or a scrapbook of design ideas and products.
Colours and finishes
Think of the colour palette of your overall bathroom design and pair your tapware to match.
For a monochromatic or industrial looking bathroom, matte black or gun metal tapware is a good choice. Sunset coloured tapware can add a touch of bespoke luxury and make a real style statement.
If you have a modern or contemporary design, choose sets made from stainless steel, chrome or brushed nickel. These tapware finishes blend well with a range of colour palettes and will allow you to be as bold or minimalistic in design as you like.
